International
Sereca Larden Muniak Consulting Inc’s (SLM) international project experience encompasses a variety of commercial, residential,
health care, industrial and assembly occupancy facilities. The staff at SLM has thorough knowledge of the NFPA 5000 –
Building Construction and Safety Code, NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code, 2006 International Building Code, and 1997 Uniform
Building Code.
Some of our recent international projects include Moscow International Commercial/Entertainment Center
(Moscow, Russia), Barrick Gold (Nevada, USA), Canadian Chancery (Seoul, Korea), Al-Hamriya Port
(Dubai, UAE), Vilnius Arena (Vilnius, Lithuania), Al Maktoum Hospital
(Dubai, UAE), Doha City Centre 5 Hotels (Doha, UAE), Jumeirah 1 Fishing Harbour (Jumeirah, UAE), Lybid Plaza (Kiev, Ukraine),
Ras Al Kaimah Hospital (Ras Al Kaimah, UAE), and Umm Sequeim 1&2 (Jumeirah Beach, UAE).

The project incorporated a 6-level Retail Mall above an existing parking and transportation structure, with a
multi-purpose 5,120 seat concert hall/theatre located at the east end of the Mall (project realization, design stage).
The Retail Mall and the Theatre have their own smoke management systems. The project also anticipated future expansion.
SLM analysis defined criteria for the most appropriate smoke management design which minimized smoke spread in means of
egress through the utilization of mechanical air-handling system, coupled with sprinklering and effective
compartmentation for both the mall and the theatre areas. It enabled evacuation to occur over a longer time period than
may be expected in smaller buildings without large floor openings.
Expand/Contract
SLM completed smoke protection and egress analysis services on the design drawings for this 179,000 m² complex.
SLM prepared reports providing: an overview of a proposed method of designing means of egress for the theatre
component of the project, an overview of approach to smoke management, and a conceptual approach to smoke
management recommended for the project.
This project involved design for fire and life safety for large numbers of people where egress time would be
extended beyond normal limits. Smoke management concepts were developed to maintain viable egress for the
required time periods. SLM utilized familiarity with smoke management analysis as a means of achieving acceptable
egress design where conventional limits for egress time and travel distance to exits would otherwise be exceeded.
Both OBC and NFPA concepts for zoned smoke management plus original recommendations for mechanical treatment of
selected egress routes were implemented which facilitated preservation of design concepts in this very large
mixed-use atrium project.

Vilnius Arena (now known as Siemens Arena) was designed as an enclosed, four storey arena building used for the
purposes of viewing various sport and concert events. Seating capacity of the stadium is 12,000. The arena building
includes various uses that are supplementary to the use of the facility and include building services, concession
stands, change rooms, lounges, and a restaurant.
Our role was to indicate the approach for achieving compliance with the applicable requirements of National Fire
Protection Association 101 (NFPA 101) for the arena, located in Lithuania, and to outline the principles that
formed the basis for applying these fire protection and life safety requirements. Our involvement included meeting
with municipal officials to facilitate application of North American code concepts and conceptual design and review
of the smoke management systems.

The Al Maktoum Hospital is a new Health care building to be located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Perkins Eastman
was selected by the Dubai Health Authority and the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), to design the
most sophisticated Accident and Emergency Hospital of its kind in the UAE. The design creates a facility capable of
providing immediate care for minor- to high-level trauma accidents and emergencies. The new state-of-the-art 400 bed
facility will be seven storeys in building height with three levels of below grade parking. The building footprint
will be approximately 17,200m².
Sereca Larden Muniak Consulting Inc. provided schematic design and design development building code compliance reports which
summarized the major aspects of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101, "Life Safety Code" and regional
codes relative to the facility.

Al-Hamriya Port is a new fishing harbor development in Dubai, UAE. The Port consists of a five-star hotel, leasable
offices, four-star hotel and related amenities, restaurants, a Souk, health club, gourmet restaurant, entertainment
center, art gallery, flagship stores, hypermarket with flagship store, nautical club and leisure marina, as well as
a working fishing port with a dock, marina center, workers’ housing, marina observation platform, and boat yard. The
site has been designed to segregate the housing and fishing operation facilities from the retail and tourist portion
of the harbor.
Sereca Larden Muniak Consulting Inc. provided a building code and fire protection review of the Master Site Plan for the
Al-Hamriya Port. The review consisted of schematic and design drawing reviews, which were detailed in the building
code compliance reports. We also focused on preserving the way of life; taking into consideration prayer rooms,
and male/female accessibility. SLM was challenged with very tight and almost unachievable time constraints. The
complexity of this project made it very interesting and was focused on working with three building code standards;
NFPA 101, NFPA 5000 and the JAFZA construction requirements.
